Garlider Sylvaner 2011

As I’m slightly obsessed with unique, off the beaten path wines, and the vibrant, character filled wines of the Alto Adige region in northern Italy, I was enthusiastic to give Garlider Sylvaner 2011 a pour. Garlider Winery is located in the Eisack Valley, the most northern wine growing region in Italy. Christian Kerschbaumer, along with his wife and children took over the 4 hectare estate from his parents. He practices organic farming and only uses indigenous yeasts and has seen the positive results this has had on the quality of both the fruit and wines. His philosophy is “to maintain the character of the vine and to distort the wine as little as possible so that one can taste where the wine comes from.”

Golden yellow in colour, after decanting aromas of citrus, sweet honeysuckle and hay rose from the glass. Grapefruit, sea minerals and wild grass elements comprised the light, buttery body whilst smoky flint minerals lingered engagingly between each sip. Creamy, salty and wonderfully refreshing, this is a distinctive, vivid glass.
