Palazzone ‘Vignarco’ Orvieto Classico 2014

orvietopalazzone - Version 2

Estate: Taking its name from a 13th century lodge that was once on the property, Podere Palazzone was purchased by the Dubini Locatelli family in 1969. Located in the rolling hills of Umbria in the heart of Italy, the estate is headed by Giovanni and Lodovico Dubini, along with their children, the next generation.

Winemaking: Passionate about organic methods, chemicals such as insecticides and fertilizers are not used in the vineyards. Instead, low environmental impact methods such as copper-based products and cover crops are employed, as well as the minimal addition of sulphites in the wine. The 25 hectares of vineyards are comprised of soil that is predominately tufa, a porous variety of limestone, along with clay, silt and sand.

Tasting Notes: Bright gold in colour with engaging aromas of dandelion, lemon, almond and honeysuckle. Lemon, yellow apple, almond and minerals are framed by a zippy acidity. Honey and herbaceous notes linger on the dry finish. A refreshing pour that pairs well with a wide of simple dishes. Great value!

80% blend of Procanico and Grechetto, the remaining 20% is Drupeggio, Verdello and Malvasia

Ruffino Orvieto Classico 2014

orvietoruff

Estate: The Ruffino estate was founded in 1877 by cousins and Tuscan natives Illario and Leopoldo Ruffino with a dream to make well-known wines in the heart of Tuscany. Generations later the estate has established itself as a leader in Chianti, creating modern wines for “the contemporary lifestyle” by using a blend of century-long tradition and current technology. They are “renowned for consistency and quality” and craft all of their wines to be enjoyed with food.

Winemaking: “Briefly” aged in stainless steel vats.

Tasting Notes: Pale gold in colour with aromas of pear and honeysuckle. Simple, light flavours of apple, honeysuckle and lemon culminate in a dry mineral finish. The bright acidity and unobtrusive character make this a good choice for glugging alongside light dishes and snacks.

Blend of Grechetto, Procanico, Verdello, and Canaiolo Blanco that can vary in percentage each vintage.

Palazzone Terre Vineate Orvieto Classico 2010

A scorching hot day filled with errands and other miscellaneous nonsense had me on a trajectory straight to the fridge for a cooling bottle of Palazzone Terre Vineate Orvieto Classico 2010. Podere Palazzone was purchased by the Dubini Locatelli family in 1969, and takes its name from a 13th century lodge that was once on the property. Passionate about organic methods, chemicals such as insecticides and fertilizers are not used in the vineyards. Instead, low environmental impact methods such as copper-based products and cover crops are employed, as well as the minimal addition of sulphites in the wine.

Straw-gold in colour, summery aromas of fresh melon, apples and honeysuckle blossoms swirled about in my glass. Rich, ripe pear and apple flavours flourished alongside a bright acidity in the light body. Mineral elements merged with refreshing bitter almond notes in the clean finish. Dry and elegant, this is a well-balanced, pleasant glass fantastic for the summer table or all on its own.
