On a cool rainy evening my sister and I gave a pour to Zagarella Alfieri Nero 2009. It was a long, tiring day and the autumn-like weather had us fancying a robust, concentrated glass to accompany our mac and many cheeses and super spicy mustard green salad. Since 1800 the Zagarella family has been dedicated to the cultivation of their lands. In addition to vineyards, they also tend to bergamot and olive trees. The grapes for the Alfieri Nera were vinified in stainless steel and then aged in oak barrels before bottling.
Dark garnet with brick around the edges, after decanting aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, black currant and pine forest rose from the glass. Dense flavours of black currant, raisin and tart cherry pie abounded in the full body. Pink peppercorn, rich sandalwood and traces of sweet vanilla comprised the moderate finish. Concentrated and plush, this is a great value and wonderful at the table.
