After enjoying Zestos Garnacha a few months back, I was thrilled to find Zestos Malvar 2012, especially since it is 100% Malvar, a grape predominately grown in Madrid that is just recently starting to receive recognition for its budget friendly wines that are described as having the brightness of Sauvignon Blanc and the richness of Chardonnay. Zestos wines are the product of Manuel Martinez, a 3rd generation winemaker whose family has been producing wine in Madrid for centuries. He owns Viños Jeromin, an organically farmed bodega that crafts wine from 3 different districts within the Madrid DO. Grapes for the Zestos Blanco were sourced from dry farmed, organic vineyards at an elevation of 750 meters, with a vine age of 35+ years.
Pale straw in colour, aromas of pear and honeysuckle radiated from the glass. Pear, pineapple and orange blossom flavours abounded in the light to medium body, whilst lemon zest and stony minerals comprised the crisp finish. Food-friendly, bright and fresh, this is an impressive value excellent for summer sipping.
Enjoy now thru 2015
