Recalling how much I enjoyed Willm Gewürztraminer and Riesling last summer, I was enthusiastic to give a pour to Willm Réserve Gentil Alsace 2011 on another dreadfully hot and sticky day. Alsace Willm Estate was founded in 1896 by the Willm family. In 1930 when Prohibition was repealed they were the first Alsace producer to export wines to the US. Employing a harmonizing blend of traditional and modern techniques they have built an international reputation for crafting wines that exhibit balance, elegance and style. The Willm philosophy is “to offer delicious fruit driven wines, with lively flavours, classic of the Alsace style”. Always striving for harmony and balance between the soil, vines and environment, they practice integrated farming as “respect for the terroir is for us a passion, because first and foremost a great wine is born from the soil”. Gentil is a denomination for a traditional white wine blend that dates back to the 19th century. The blend must consist of a minimum of 50% Riesling, Muscat and/or Gewürztraminer, the remainder can be Sylvaner, Chasselas and/or Pinot Blanc.
Bright gold in colour, with summery aromas of apricot, peach, ginger and honeysuckle. Corresponding flavours of apricot, pear, and honey were balanced by a crisp finish of ginger, river stone minerals and citrus elements. Refined, sunny and fresh, this is an easy drinking glass fantastic with warm weather and light dishes.
