Old York Cellars Sweet Riesling 2013
Gold in colour with radiant aromas of honeysuckle, lime and fresh herbaceous elements. Sweet red apple and honeysuckle flavours are balanced by hints of pleasantly bitter citrus zest. A versatile, sweeter Riesling that is great on its own or fantastic with a wide variety of dishes, from fruit, chocolate to cheddar cheese.

Old York Cellars Merlot NV
An interesting example of the innovative spirit of the winemaker, this is a blend of the 2013 and 2014 vintages. 2013 was a huge, bold vintage, whilst 2014 saw young, light grapes. Winemaker Scott Gares excersised his artistic flair by blending the two together to create an well balanced wine.

Garnet in color with floral aromas highlighted by strawberry preserves and earth notes. Fruity and plush with cherry and strawberry flavours joined by hints of baking chocolate in the medium body, culminating in a big smoky earth finish. This pairs wonderfully with hearty dishes.

Two fantastic wines for summer bbq, patio and roof deck sipping. [Photobomb by Violet]

Old York Cellars Pinot Gris 2013
Crafted in the French style, this is a heartier version of Pinot Grigio. A interesting example of winemaker prowess, Scott used R-2 Yeast, a yeast that is typically paired with Riesling; the result is the crisp apple character and the clean, dry finish. Incredibly pale gold in colour, this Pinot Gris exudes tart granny smith apple flavours that are backed by grapefruit zest, minerals and the tiniest trace of coconut. Lemon and pink grapefruit shine on the dry finish. Super refreshing, like taking a bite out of a granny smith apple. [Gold Medal Winner of the 2015 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition]

Old York Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon
Aged for 8 months in American oak, which Scott explained imparts a little less vanilla flavour to the wine then French oak. A juicy summer red that is light on its feet with ripe cherry and blackberry flavours, hints of oak, soft tannins and a fantastic spicy dry finish. One of the signs of good winemaking, the 15.6% alcohol is unnoticeable [so watch out, it does sneak up on you!]

Old York Cellars Dry Riesling & Malbec Tasting

I had the pleasure of participating in a Virtual Vines discussion with winemaker Scott Gares of Old York Cellars, sommelier Laurin Dorman and Chef Jonas Gold of 55 Main. Old York Cellars is located in the Ringoes section of Hunterdon County and contains some of the oldest vineyards in New Jersey. In addition to award winning wines and a lovely tasting room, they also hold special events such as art exhibits, yoga classes and Master Chef Dinners.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the tasting presented a timely spotlight on wine pairings. Chef Jonas Gold presented a variety of modern and classic dishes utilizing traditional thanksgiving ingredients such as pumpkin, roasted veggies and turkey. Whilst the two wines range in flavour and style, they are both versatile companions to a wide variety of dishes, especially Thanksgiving cuisine.

The wines below are all $18 and bear the vintage postcard label, when ordering you can customize what town or exit you would like on your label. Proceeds from every ‘What Exit Wines’ are donated to Hurricane Sandy relief in New Jersey. The idea was born when they found themselves having to use a generator to make their wines immediately after Sandy struck and were inspired to give back to New Jersey charities.
