Fronton de Oro Tradicional Tinto Gran Canaria 2014

frontondeoro
Estate: Fronton de Oro is a family winery headed by Pedro and Antonio Ramírez and is located in the hills of Gran Canaria Island, in the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain. The majority of the 6 hectares of vineyards are located above 1000 meters on terraced slopes with volcanic soils. Gran Canaria received its DO [Denominaciones de Origen] status in 2000, making it the youngest wine region in the Canary Islands.

Winemaking: Although not certified, organic farming and methods are used. Grapes are sourced from high elevation vineyards with volcanic soils. Aged for 3 months in used American oak. Less then 4,000 cases produced.

Tasting Notes: Transparent garnet in colour with aromas of black cherry, earth, spice and a hint of leather. There is a smoky, volcanic edge to the black cherry, raspberry and dried herbs. Firm tannins compliment dark chocolate, spice and earthy minerality on the moderate finish. Powerful flavours, yet very easy drinking and a fantastic pairing with a wide variety of dishes, especially anything roasted.

*Listán Negro is a Spanish black skinned grape that is predominately planted in the Canary Islands, especially on the island of Tenerife. The grape historically was widely planted in the Castile region of northern Spain, and it is believed that settlers to the Canary Islands brought the grape with them. The vines are planted in small pits in the volcanic soils, which serve to capture moisture and offer protection from the hot, strong dry winds of the area. A broad spectrum of styles can be produced from the grape, varying from light Rosé wines with soft tannins to rich reds loaded with smoky spice and dark fruits.
