Estate: Founded in 1997, Cantina Giardino is a collaboration between Antonio and Daniela di Gruttola, along with 4 of their friends. They set out to save indigenous, old vineyards in Irpinia that were at risk of being abandoned or uprooted. Vineyards occupy 16 distinct parcels, totaling nearly 6 hectares. Allowing the grape and the volcanic terroir express itself, Antonio farms using low intervention, biodynamic and organic methods.
Winemaking: 75 year old vines at 500 meters in elevation, heavy clay over limestone soils. Wild yeast spontaneous fermentation, 2 months maceration, aged in chestnut barrels 3 ½ years, unfined, unfiltered, no added SO2.
Tasting Notes: Smoky earth, rose petal, black cherry, blueberry, blackberry, fresh acidity over a framework of sticky tannins. Ripe red cherry, dark chocolate, orange peel, clove, wisp of smoky earth minerality linger between each velvety sip. Dapper, robust.
