Estate: Carlo Tabarrini grew up in a farming family in Umbria. Vineyards were part of the farm’s crops, although the grapes were sold off and only a small amount kept to make their house wine. In 2002 he leased half a hectare of abandoned, old vines in Sant’Enea. Revitalizing the vineyard with organic and biodynamic methods, he began Cantina Margo in 2008, the following year he purchased the leased vineyard. He continued rescuing abandoned/neglected vineyards over the years, currently he has nearly 3 hectares of 25-50 year old vineyards.
Winemaking: Organic, biodynamic viticulture. Vines are in marl, limestone and clay soils, hand-harvested, destemmed, wild yeast spontaneous fermentation with skin maceration for 1 night without temperature control in stainless steel and fiberglass tanks, 20% aged in neutral oak, 80% in stainless steel. Unfined, unfiltered.
Tasting Notes: Apricot, mango, orange, wildflowers, clover honey burnished with tangy acidity. Green tea tannins merge with orange zest, lanolin on the salty mineral finish. Beaming, engaging.
