Il Vinco ‘Le Capannacce’ Rosso 2019

Winery: Founded in 2014, Il Vinco is a collaboration between friends Daniele Manoni, Marco Fucini, and Nicola Brenciaglia. One of their main objectives was to revitalize and preserve the indigenous Canaiolo Nero vines along Lake Bolsena in Lazio. The 2.5 hectares of rescued old vine vineyards are on the southern slopes of the volcanic lake at 250-450 meters in elevation in Montefiascone. [The name Il Vinco comes from the willow branch used to tie vines to stakes in the vineyard.]

Winemaking: Organic, biodynamic [certified], minimal intervention. From Marco Fucini’s ‘Le Capannacce’ vineyard near the cellar, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast in concrete vats, aged 3 months in stainless steel, unfiltered, unfined, no added SO2.

Tasting Notes: Black cherry, blueberry, pomegranate, chocolate, wisp of smoky minerality framed by fine grain tannins and fresh acidity. Roasted hazelnut, raspberry grilled rosemary linger between each lush sip. Dashing, with a sprightly play of savory and fruit.

100% Grechetto Rosso [Sangiovese, probably, see Native Wine Grapes of Italy, Ian D’Agata, page 431]
