La Miraja Grignolino d’Asti DOC 2020

Estate: La Miraja is ensconced in the original 11th century castle of Castagnole Monferrato, in Piemonte, northwestern Italy. Eugenio Gatti is the 7th generation of his family to produce wine there. Castagnole Monferrato is regarded as the birthplace of Ruché, and rather fittingly, Eugenio Gatti has the oldest vineyard of Ruché grapes in existence. The armory of the castle was retrofitted as a wine cellar in the 1400’s and is still used by Gatti today. The estate’s total annual production is only about 850 cases.

Winemaking: Organic viticulture. Southwest facing vines in calcareous red clay soils at 280 meters in elevation. Hand-harvested, destemmed, crushed by basket press, wild yeast spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel. After malolactic fermentation, aged for a few months in cement.

Tasting Notes: Strawberry, cherry, candied violet, elderflower liquor glide atop fine grain tannins and fresh acidity. Black cherry, thyme, lavender and black tea linger between each silky sip. Engaging, sleek.
