Estate: 4th generation winemaker Angelo Fongoli along with his wife Letizia head the estate his great uncle founded in the early 1900s. The biodiverse farm is a contiguous parcel of about 35 hectares, 23 of which are vineyards, 6 of woods, the remainder is meadow and truffle grounds. All farming is biodynamic and organic [certified 2013], grapes are those traditional to the Montefalco region.
Winemaking: Vines planted in 1993, in clay silt soils with “with good skeletal structure, high in organic substances, with a good nitrogen-carbon ratio. Higher in active limestone”. Hand harvested, spontaneous wild yeast fermentation without temperature control, aged in stainless steel, clarification by racking and oxygenations, unfiltered, no added SO2, bottled during the first waning moon in February.
Tasting Notes: Blackberry, black cherry, plum, pink peppercorn, nutmeg, violet, trace of balsam resin across a framework of fine grain tannins, tangy acidity and the slightest whorl of fizz. Pomegranate, trace of chocolate, thyme, pomegranate infuse the hazelnut finish. Spunky, engaging.
