Winery: Founded in 2014, Il Vinco is a collaboration between friends Daniele Manoni, Marco Fucini, and Nicola Brenciaglia. [The name Il Vinco comes from the willow branch used to tie vines to stakes in the vineyard.] One of their main objectives was to revitalize and preserve the indigenous Canaiolo Nero vines along Lake Bolsena in Lazio. The 2.5 hectares of rescued old vine vineyards are on the southern slopes of the volcanic lake at 250-450 meters in elevation in Montefiascone.
Winemaking: Organic, biodynamic [certified], minimal intervention. Vines are in volcanic and sandy soils, wild yeast spontaneous fermentation of grapes varieties separately in concrete tanks with 2 days skin maceration for the Canaiolo, aged for 6 months in stainless steel and fiberglass, unfined, unfiltered, no added SO2.
Tasting Notes: Black Cherry, pomegranate, elderberry, smoky earth minerality, tangy acidity, the slightest shimmer of fizz fuse with light Ceylon black tea tannins. Black currant lingers on the smoky, roasted nut finish. Wild, dynamic, striking.
