Estate: Georg Schmelzer is the 4th generation of his family to make wine in the town of Gols in the NeusiedlamSee district of Burgenland. The roughly 15 hectares of vineyards are certified biodynamic and organic. The estate is self-sufficient and sustainable; the Schmelzer family cultivates all of their food, and water is sourced from a well on their land.
Philosophy: “The goal of our work is not to maximize, but to harmonize and support nature in its fertility – year after year.”
Winemaking: Clay and sandy soils, hand harvested, wild yeast spontaneous fermentation with 8 weeks of skin maceration in old, small barrels, gravity fed, aged in old barrels, unfiltered, unfined, no added SO2.
Tasting Notes: Ever evolving layers of nectarine, apricot, mango, lemon tart, roasted nuts, candied ginger, hay, beeswax framed by citrus acidity and green tea tannins. Citrus zest, blood orange infuse the smoky mineral finish. Creamy, engaging, mercurial.
