Estate: The Caravaglio family has been cultivating grapes in the Aeolian islands, off the coast of Sicily, for over 500 years. Antonino “Nino” Caravaglio took over his family’s 2 hectare farm in 1989, with the goal of producing quality wines that respect the land. Over the years he was able to slowly acquire additional land; currently the estate consists of 20 hectares divided into about 30 plots, stretching across the islands of Salina and Lipari.
Certified biological by the French organization, Nature et Progres since 1989 [long before most certifications existed], the estate has also been certified organic by Ecocert since 1994. Following in the footsteps of generations before him that respected the land as a source of life, he is “starting from an excellent raw material”. Respecting and preserving the land is an “ethical imperative”.
Philosophy: “These islands are a common heritage and agriculture too must do its part to protect its beauty and the integrity of the landscape, which has always been an agricultural landscape.”
Winemaking: Hand harvested grapes are from the ‘Tricoli’ vineyard, its triangular shape stretches up a steep, northwest facing slope in the Malfa district. Vines are 10-20 years old, in rocky, volcanic soils. Spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, aged 3 months in stainless steel tanks on the fine lees.
Tasting Notes: Creamy lemon custard, ginger, almond, honeysuckle, wisp of sea spray and smoky minerality glossed with light citrus acidity. Peach and orange zest infuse the salty mineral driven finish. Lustrous, exquisite.
