Estate: I Vini di Giovanni is a collaboration between renowned Umbrian natural winemaker Danilo Marcucci and Sardinian native/Umbrian raised shepherd/winemaker Giovanni Mesina. Giovanni’s sheep and olive tree filled estate land lies in the rolling hills of Pianello, north of Perugia; vineyards occupy just 3 hectares. Driven “to capture the magical expression of the fruit and the earth”, Giovanni farms organically, with biodynamic principles and a minimal intervention approach in both the vineyard and cellar. In addition to traditional Umbrian grapes, he cultivates Vermentino, “his favorite white variety from Sardinia.
Winemaking: Vines are in clay/limestone soils 400 meters in elevation. Wild yeast spontaneous fermentation in open-air resin tank with 2 days of skin maceration, aged in fiberglass tanks until February. Second “spontaneous refermentation in bottle with an addition of frozen must of the same wine”. Unfined, unfiltered, no added SO2.
Tasting Notes: Lemon, pear, butterscotch, trace of herbs, citrus acidity whorl around lively fizz. Light green tea tannins merge with orange zest, drizzle of honey on the crisp, flinty mineral finish. Beaming, charismatic.
