Estate: Passionate, innovative winemaker Andrea Occhipinti fell in love with Gradoli, after devoting his master thesis to Gradoli vineyards whilst at the Agrarian University of Tuscia. About an hour north of Roma, Gradoli is on the north-western shores of Lake Bolsena. The largest volcanic lake in Europe, Lake Bolsena provides a unique microclimate in addition to the distinctive terroir. His 4 hectares of organically farmed vineyards are at 450 meters in elevation and were planted in the 1990s.
Philosophy: To preserve and promote the characteristics of the two native grape varieties of Gradoli: Aleatico and Red Grechetto, to “produce wines with the flavor of tradition and the effervescence of innovation”.
Winemaking: Whole cluster pressing without skin contact, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in small concrete barrels; a Blanc de noir, a white wine made with red grapes.
Tasting Notes: Nectarine, pear, apple, jasmine, beeswax, flinty minerality, sea salt flanked by citrus acidity and green tea tannins. Peach and orange zest infuse the smoky finish. Dynamic, engaging, compelling.
