Estate: Brothers Daniel and Jonas Brand are the 5th generation of their family to craft wine in the northern Pfalz region of Germany. Their 18 hectares of vineyards are farmed using biodynamic, low intervention and organic [certified] methods. With their dedication to traditional grapes and methods along with an experimental approach, their wines have swiftly achieved rock star status. All of their labels are illustrations by their grandmother, Oma Helga.
Winemaking: Hand harvested grapes are from a 1 ½ acre vineyard planted by their grandfather and worked by him with his horse, Flora. “The vineyard is at the top of the Sonnenberg mountain and thus is ravished by wind and experiences extreme temperature shifts between day and night.” Fermented with indigenous yeasts, unfined, unfiltered, no added SO2. This is a blend of the 2016 and 2017 vintages.
Tasting Notes: Inky red-violet in colour, with aromas of blueberry, plum, cinnamon, bramble, wildflowers. Blackberry, blueberry, red currant, baking spices and earth are flanked by lively acidity and supple tannins. Blood orange and black cherry linger on the tangy finish. Plush yet sprightly.
