Estate: Founded in 1997, Cantina Giardino is a collaboration between Antonio and Daniela di Gruttola, along with 4 of their friends. They set out to save indigenous, old vineyards in Irpinia that were at risk of being abandoned or uprooted. Vineyards occupy 16 distinct parcels, totaling nearly 6 hectares. Allowing the grape and the volcanic terroir express itself, Antonio farms using low intervention, biodynamic and organic methods.
Winemaking: Grapes are from old vines in clay soils at 700 meters in elevation. Spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts on the skins for 3 weeks, 9 months ageing in chestnut barrels, no added SO2.
Tasting Notes: Inky red-violet in colour, with aromas of smoky earth, black cherry, raspberry. Red currant, pomegranate, cherry, dark chocolate and super light fizz are framed by black tea tannins and bright acidity. Black currant and black cherry infuse the smoky mineral finish. Engaging, rich with an agile edge.
