Estate: The Uccelliera estate was established in 1986 by Andrea Cortonesi and is located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate in the Montalcino region of Tuscany. He retained the farm’s original name of “Uccelliera” [bird house], and joined 2 adjacent hectares to bring the estate to 6 hectares total. Fantastically passionate about the land, Andrea preserved the original olive groves rather then turn them over to vines. He realized “that I was perhaps seeking to live a relationship with this earth that went beyond simple business principles”.
Philosophy: “Love for the earth of which we respectfully ask its fruits for our life.”
Winemaking: Andrea Cortonesi practices strict organic farming principles, along with integrated insect and disease control, and adds only very low amounts of SO2 to the wines. From vines in clay, sandy soils rich in minerals. Fermented in stainless steel, aged in various sized barrels for 5-8 months. The Rosso is limited in production; the grapes are “selected from the youngest Brunello di Montalcino vineyards, or those in cooler areas”.
Tasting Notes: Transparent garnet in colour, with aromas of black cherry, red currant, herbs, earth, leather and spice. Cherry, strawberry, violet, herbs, earth and fresh acidity are framed by supple tannins. Pomegranate, red currant, black pepper and a trace of toasted spice linger on the silky finish. Agile and refined.
