Estate: Headed by the 5th generation of the family, Le Calendre is located in the foothills of San Pietro in Cariano, in the heart of Valpolicella Classica. The family is dedicated to preserving the ancient winemaking traditions of the region and caring for the land. The 4 hectares of vineyards are farmed using organic and low intervention methods.
‘Le Calendre’ refers to an ancient method of recording and forecasting the weather, thereby planning the work to be done in the vineyards and cellar. Based on centuries old traditions passed down to each generation, this heritage is honored in the estate’s name.
Winemaking: The best bunches of grapes are selected and left to dry on wood trays for 110-120 days in drying lofts, losing about 40% of their initial weight while sugar levels increase. “Soft pressing in the middle of February with a roller crusher- destemmer. Slow maceration in stainless steel tanks with periodic pumping over and délestage. Aged in big Slavonian Oak barrels for 24 months and refinement in the bottle.”
Tasting Notes: Garnet brick in colour, with aromas of black cherry, dried cranberry, a wisp of cedar, clove, orange peel, brown sugar and crushed pink peppercorn. Layers of black cherry, plum, blackberry, vanilla, black pepper, leather and dark chocolate are framed by fresh acidity and firm tannins. Black cherry, clove, trace of toasted oak and caramel saturate the velvety finish. Silky, well balanced, supple, dynamic.
