Winery: Founded in 1960, Produttori di Nebbiolo di Carema is a cooperative winery located in the mountains overlooking the Dora Baltea valley in northwestern Piemonte, bordering on Valle d’Aosta. There are 71 grower members whose lands are all next to each other; each family generally owns less than 1 hectare of vines. The goal of the cooperative is to preserve the traditional winemaking traditions of the tiny region.
Winemaking: Viticulture is sustainable, with organic methods. Hand harvested grapes are from steep, southeast facing hillside vineyards at 300-600 meters in elevation, with rocky glacial schist soils. “Fermented in stainless steel and/or cement for 20-30 days with a twelve-day maceration on the skins. Aged for two years in large casks ranging from 15 to 50HL.”
Tasting Notes: Transparent garnet in colour, with aromas of cherry, strawberry, rose petal, dusty earth, anise and a wisp of cedar. Cherry, pomegranate, red currant and black pepper are framed by tangy acidity and silky, firm tannins. Black cherry, orange zest and a trace of eucalyptus linger on the toasted oak finish. Sateen and straightforward.
