Estate: Valle dell’Acate (literally “Acate Valley”) is located in the historic Bidini domain, amid the winding hills of Valle del Dirillo, on the edge of southeastern Sicily. Founded at the end of the 19th century by Giuseppe Jacono, today the estate is one of the most well known in southern Sicily. Passed down to each generation, Gaetana Jacono is the 6th generation of her family to head the estate. Committed to eco-sustainable winemaking, the estate has been awarded many awards for their environmental preservation efforts.
The 100 hectares of vineyards are farmed organically and planted according to the soil type. “7 Soils for 7 Wines: Each individual wine in Valle dell’Acate’s most prestigious line is born of soil that has been identified and carefully selected to help characterize the individual grapevine, resulting in a final product that is a special, unique expression of the earth that produced it. There are seven distinct soils in the company’s territory, and each encapsulates the essence of Sicily and the Ragusa province, as well as the Jacono family’s winemaking history and Gaetana’s strength and passion.”
Winemaking: Grapes are from vineyards located 100 meters in elevation. “The soil is black, relatively compact and riddled with white stones. The soil structure makes it possible for plant roots to oxygenate freely, extending down deep into the ground.” Aged in steel vats for 6 months, followed by at least 3 months in the bottle.
Tasting Notes: Transparent ruby red in colour, with aromas of strawberry, cherry, rose petal, bramble, dusty earth and sea spray. Black tea tannins and fresh acidity flank wild strawberry, cherry and Mediterranean herbs. Strawberry, Darjeeling tea, and a squeeze of citrus zest infuse the mineral driven finish. Simple, fruity and agile.
