Estate: Descending from more than 7 generations of wine growers, Michele Chiarlo began producing wine in 1956 with a philosophy of only using indigenous grapes. A pioneering force in establishing a market for the fine wines of Piedmont, his wines are renowned for their elegance and expression of terroir. Always an innovator, he was one of the first producers to use methods such as limiting yields and decreasing maceration time in order to create a soft, more traditional style of Barolo.
With 148 estate acres and an additional 50 acres, he and his sons Stefano and Alberto preside over some of the most acclaimed and prestigious vineyards in Piedmont, including Barolo, Barbaresco and Nizza. With a goal of reducing man’s impact on nature, the estate is dedicated to sustainable viticulture. Stating: “sustainability is tenderness”, their approach and care transcends beyond the soil and vines; the estate protects the air, water and UNESCO hills of the region. Located on 20 hectares in Barbera d’Asti, L’Art Park La Court is an open air museum promoting artists and cultural events.
Winemaking: With documents [and a bottle of wine!] dating back to 1752, Cannubi is the oldest single vineyard, most historical cru [MGA] within the commune of Barolo. Located at 240 meters in elevation, vines were planted 1958-1990, with Tortonian and Helvetian calcareous marl and sands poor in organic matter but rich in minerals, such as magnesium, iron and potassium. Aged in large oak botti for 2 years, followed by 20 months in the bottle. Produced only in “excellent vintages”.
Tasting Notes: Garnet-brick in colour, very aromatic; black cherry, plum, smoky earth, iron minerality, rose petal, black tea leaves, clove, grilled herbs and frankincense. Black cherry, red cherry, tarry earth, licorice, forest floor are framed by fresh acidity and firm tannins. Clove, black cherry, blood orange, white pepper and iron minerality infuse the plush finish. Velvety, genteel, with an elegant radiance.
