Estate: Chiara Penati and her husband Michele Conoscenti founded Oltretorrente in 2010. The name Oltretorrente translates to “beyond the stream,” in reference to the Scrivia, a tributary of the Po River, but it can also be interpreted as “countercurrent”. Agronomists, they had worked throughout Italy and decided to start their own estate in the hills of Tortona, in Piemonte, northwestern Italy. The 7 hectares of vineyards range from 15 to 100 years in age and are located on steep slopes. Farming organically and biodynamically, they passionately protect and maintain the old vines and biodiversity.
Philosophy: They are committed to “a balance between saving and preserving the legacy old farmers left us and making high quality wines from these old vineyards with an organic approach, which is the best way to express the history, the soil, the identity of this area.
Winemaking: Grapes are from 5 vineyard parcels totaling 2.1 hectares, planted between 1955 and 1976 with silty calcareous and clay soils. Harvested and vinified separately in concrete, completely destemmed, with macerations lasting around 3 weeks. Aged for 8 months in concrete tanks followed by 3 months in the bottle.
Tasting Notes: Red-violet in colour, with aromas of cherry pie filling, violet, bramble, wisp of roasted nuts and cocoa. Pomegranate, blackberry, red currant, cherry, white pepper, grilled herbs are framed by bright acidity and black tea tannins. Black cherry and cocoa accent a bitter almond streak on the velveteen finish. Plush and vibrant, consistently a superb value.
90% Barbera, 10% Dolcetto [A few vines of Croatina, Freisa, Slarina, Brachetto and Aleatico are randomly in the vineyard and make their way into the blend.]
