Estate: Agnanum is located on a hill within a crater of the extinct Agnano volcano in Campi Flegrei, Campania. Rafaelle Moccio farms his 10 hectares of old, ungrafted vines using organic methods and minimal intervention. His organically farmed vineyards are considered historical, as the vines range from 60 to over 200 years in age.
Winemaking: From younger vines at the top of the terraces, soil is volcanic ash and sand and basalt. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeast in stainless steel. ‘Sabbia Vulcanica’ translates to ‘volcanic sands’.
Tasting Notes: Red-violet in colour, very aromatic; with cherry, strawberry, raspberry, violet, tarry earth, licorice and peppery spice. Pomegranate, cherry, wild strawberry, white pepper, trace of wildflowers and tangy acidity are framed by firm, silky, black tea tannins. Blackberry, black cherry and cranberry infuse the smoky mineral finish. Sleek and engaging.
