Estate: Located on the easternmost Canary Island of Lanzarote, Los Bermejos is headed by pioneering winemaker Ignacio Valdera. Between the extreme climate and lava and ash soil that runs 3-5 meters deep, winemaking is incredibly labor intensive, with minimal amounts of wine produced. However, the pre-phylloxera vines produce incredibly pure, expressive wines.
Winemaking: The estate practices organic and sustainable viticulture. Each vine is planted in a hole that is dug deep enough to reach the soil rich in nutrients that lies below the infertile volcanic crust. Very Sci-Fi looking, like a vineyard on Mars, check out pics of these amazing vines at the Los Bermejos site here.
Winemaking: Whole bunch carbonic maceration, followed by pressing and fermentation.
Tasting Notes: Red-violet in colour, very aromatic; super ripe blueberry, strawberry, cherry, along with licorice, candied violet, grilled herbs, candied mint and campfire smoke. Vivid cherry, strawberry, blueberry, wisp of campfire smoke and a trace of eucalyptus are flanked by silky tannins and fresh acidity. Black cherry, candied violet and smoky earth linger between each bright sip. Engaging, sleek and juicy.
