Estate: Celebrating their 100th year of making wine in Castiglione Falletto, the Azelia estate was established in 1920 by Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino when he began producing wine from his family’s vineyards. Today, his grandson, 3rd generation winemaker Luigi Scavino, along with his son Lorenzo, head the 16 hectare estate in the heart of the Langhe. Luigi’s wines are renowned for their classical character and superb quality.
Luigi’s father Alfonso planted the vineyards in the 1940’s. These old vines are known for “their lower yields and their deeper roots, which produce amazing grapes”. Organic and sustainable farming is practiced; absolutely no chemicals are added to the soil. Natural manure is added only to the poorest soils every 3-4 years; native grasses are left to flourish between the rows. Only wild fermentation is used, the wine is not filtered or clarified, enzymes are not added.
Philosophy: A combination of respect for tradition and modern techniques that allow the wine to express itself.
Winemaking: From the estate’s youngest vines, 20 years average age, in Castiglione Falletto, 235-340 meters in elevation, with white calcareous soils. Vinified and aged in stainless steel.
Tasting Notes: Ruby in colour, with aromas of cherry, black cherry, raspberry, almond, orange zest and rose petal. Blood orange, cherry, raspberry, white pepper, tarry earth and fresh acidity are framed by solid tannins. A streak of almond fuses with pomegranate, black cherry and a wisp of smoke on the spicy, plush finish. Well balanced and refined.
