Estate: Located in the rugged hills of Maremma, near the Tuscan coast in Italy, Ampeleia is the passion project of 3 friends; pioneering winemaker Elisabetta Foradori, Thomas Widmann and Giovanni Podini. With the concept of capturing the diversity and magnitude of the land, the vines in Ampeleia intentionally grow in different areas with a range of altitudes and soils. This allows each vineyard plot to express its distinctive personality.

Philosophy: “Ampeleia wines seek to bring into your glass the simple and honest taste of Roccatederighi’s inherent diversity by observing, becoming aware and understanding its profound character.”

Winemaking: All vineyards are farmed biodynamically and organically. As little as possible human intervention in the winery, with only indigenous yeasts used. Grapes are from vineyards located 180 to 250 meters in elevation. Grapes are vinified separately, “a small part of the harvest undergoes carbonic maceration, the rest is either done whole berry or crushed”. [From US importer Bowler] Aged for 6 months in cement tanks. The name Unlitro represents “one litre of Ampeleia – an expression of Ampeleia’s vitality and subtly delicate nature”.

Tasting Notes: Transparent ruby in colour, with aromas of strawberry, sour cherry, bramble and earth. Morello cherry, pomegranate, wild strawberry, red currant, bramble, and peppery spice are framed by silky Darjeeling tea tannins and bright acidity. Cranberry and a trace of black currant linger on the spicy finish. Agile, silky, fresh, always easy drinking, versatile and a fantastic value. A bit of a change in the grapes for the 2019, with the addition of Mourvèdre and Sangiovese.
