Estate: Natural winemaker extraordinaire and all-around rock star of Puglia, Valentina Passalacqua farms her family vines using biodynamic and organic methods. Located inside Gargano National Park in northern Puglia, the 80 hectares of land was once thought to be so poor that only cattle were grazed on it. At 200 meters in elevation, the calcareous white rocky soil is complimented by Mediterranean climate. Passionate and expressive, just as her wines, click here to explore more.
The Calcarius group of wines are a project that Valentina collaborated with Umbrian native, “master natural wine-whisperer, eno-artisan” Danilo Marcucci. Her goal is “to explore the encounter between art and science. They have a masculine, vertical, fresh and mineral character. They originate from special white stony and calcareous soils of the Kimmeridgian age, exposed to the warm sun of the Gargano”.
Philosophy: “I make natural wine above all to sit down at the table with the people I love, drink my wines, enjoy the harmony with food and excite me…”
Winemaking: Grapes are from vines 15 years in age, with “rocky, limestone, marble soils with calcified seashells”. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts on the skins in stainless steel for 4 days, unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Notes: Orange-pink in colour, with aromas of melon, rose petal, wild strawberry, hibiscus flower and chalky minerals. Flavours echo the aromas; with strawberry, melon, hibiscus flower and chalky minerality glossed by tangy acidity. Orange zest and herbs linger on the bright finish. Straightforward, with a super easy drinking nature.
