Cantina Furlani ‘Alpino’ Vino Spumante 2018

Estate: Matteo Furlani is the 4th generation of his family to farm the tiny plots of vines 700+ meters in altitude, in the Dolomites of Trentino, northeastern Italy. The estate was always farmed organically, without any chemicals. Matteo has taken this natural approach further, adopting biodynamic methods.

Philosophy: “Grapes cultivated and vinified with passion, always respecting nature, environment and animals.”

Winemaking: Grapes are from 30 year old vineyards in small parcels surrounding the village of Povo, directly above Trento. Soils are calcareous, clay over schist with broken granite [sasso dolomitico]. From the Cantina Furlani site: “The method used for Sur Lie is something in between Pet Nats, Ancestral Method, Champagne Method.” Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel, frozen must added in the Spring to start re-fermentation in the bottle, no sulphur, not disgorged.

Tasting Notes: Foggy light gold in colour, with aromas of lemon, herbs, wildflowers, linseed and tarry earth. Lemon, flinty minerality and fresh herbs are glossed by fresh acidity and light fizz. Citrus zest and a nutty streak accent the mineral driven finish. Fresh and bright.
