Estate: Founded in Sardinia in 1950, Mario Pala is the 3rd generation to head the estate, along with his wife Rita and their children Massimiliano, Elisabetta and Mariantonietta. The estate’s vineyards are organized into 8 single vineyard sites with a total of 68 hectares of vines, based on their terroir, exposure and soil type. Varietals are planted in the vineyard with the best microclimate and soil for their particular needs. Farming is organic and without the use of any chemicals.
Philosophy: “From father to son since 1950 there’s the most important ingredients that the Pala family has always added to terroir, tradition, respect for the environment: the passion to make wines that are able to express the family character and the terroir of this extraordinary island.”
Winemaking: Vines are 35 years in age, in clay/calcareous soil, 150/180 meters in elevation. “Maceration on the skins at controlled temperature for ten days. At the end of the alcoholic fermentation the malolactic one takes place and then the refinement for twelve months in three thousand liters French oak barrels followed by three more months in stainless steel vats and four more in bottle.”
Tasting Notes: Garnet in colour, with aromas of baked berries, cedar, black pepper, cigar box spice and vanilla. Rich blackberry, black cherry, raspberry and blueberry, wrap around a spicy core, fusing with iron minerality, firm tannins and fresh acidity. Eucalyptus, black cherry, vanilla and cigar box spice linger on the plush finish. Hearty and well balanced.
