Estate: Since the 1970s, Jean-Pierre Margan has been dedicated to organic and biodynamic farming. His family estate and 17th century manor have been home to 6 generations of the Margan family. The famed, picturesque estate can trace its roots back to Roman times when it was famed for its natural spring. Located between Avignon and Aix en Provenc in southern France, the property is at the heart of the Luberon Regional Natural Park and in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The 42 hectares of vineyards are terraced, with an average vine age of 30 years. Along with being certified organic, Jean-Pierre, along with his daughter Natalie, also employ biodynamic and low intervention methods.
Winemaking: Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, fermented in stainless steel, aged in large foudres [enormous wood vat].
Tasting Notes: Dark red violet in colour, with aromas of rose, bramble, earth, lavender, violet, peppery spice and cherry. Rose petal, lavender, bergamot, black cherry, pomegranate, blackberry, garrique, black pepper and a meaty streak are supported by firm tannins and fresh acidity. Dark fruit, rose petal, lavender, garrigue and saline minerality linger on the lush finish. Silky and rich, an engaging synthesis of floral and savory elements. A spectacular value.
