Winery: Kellerei Bozen/Cantina Bozen is the result of a merger between the 2 most historic coops in Alto Adige; Santa M and Cantina Gries. With their tiny estates [some only 1 hectare] the 224 members are dedicated to natural and sustainable methods.
Huck am Bach is the vineyard name of Hannes and Gottfried Plattner; it takes its name from a 16th century mayor of Bolzano. The father and son team farm the steep, terraced vineyard on the slopes north of Bolzano in the heart of Santa Maddalena [St. Magdalener], the historic home of Schiava.
Winemaking: The vineyard is 250-500 meters in elevation, with quartz, sand and clay soil, vines are 45+ years in age. Fermented in large botti, aged in large oak vats for 12 months.
Tasting Notes: Ruby red in colour with aromas of strawberry, raspberry, candied flowers and white pepper. Raspberry, strawberry, cherry, pomegranate, rose petal, white pepper and an herbaceous streak merge with black tea tannins and soft acidity. A bitter nuance accents bright berry fruits on the clean finish. Silky, well-structured and genteel.
