Estate: Tenuta Terraviva is headed by Pietro Topi, his wife Pina and their daughter Federica [pictured above]. Located in the Hills of Tortoreto overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the province of Teramo in Abruzzo, the certified organic estate has 19 of its 22 hectares under vine. The estate focuses on indigenous, traditional varietals such as Passerina, Pecorino, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, and Trebbiano d’Abruzzese.
Winemaking: Organic and low intervention methods are used in both the vineyards and cellar. All grapes are hand harvested; fermentations are spontaneous with native yeasts. Soils are a mix of clay and limestone.
After enjoying a couple of the estate’s wines in Abruzzo a few weeks earlier, I was thrilled when Federica let me know that she would be attending Slow Wine in NYC. I was delighted to taste 4 more, and incredibly thankful for the time and details Federica passed along. [And answering my follow up questions weeks later :)]
The wines Giusi, Mario and Lui are named after Federica’s great grandparents, Ekwo translates to good/right and is written in the Greek alphabet.
