Estate: Located near the dormant volcano dome of Puy de Dôme, in Volvic, central France, Vincent Marie passionately cultivates 5 hectares of vines with biodynamic, organic and low intervention principles. The diverse terroir from the ancient volcano allows him to craft 5-7 cuvées from his small estate. His wines are renown for their purity and eloquence.
Winemaking: Grapes are from the ‘Beauregard Vendon’ plot. The 25 year old vines have been farmed organically since being planted. At 430 meters in elevation, it is the most northern plot of the estate, with granite soil rich in biotite, along with “two quartz veins going through the upper layer”. Spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, “Whole bunches in a wooden tronconical tank, daily punch-down during 12 days. Devatting, pressing, blending of the free-run and pressed juice. No added chemical inputs.” Aged in 23hl cask. Unfiltered, no added So2. ‘Magma Rock’ is after the granite soil which is “a magmatic plutonic rock”.
Tasting Notes: Inky red-violet in colour, deeply aromatic, with black cherry, blackberry jam, cinnamon, black olive, violet, spearmint, black pepper, pine forest and candied rose petal. Supple layers of black cherry, raspberry, plum, blackberry, red currant, forest floor, smoky earth and black pepper are framed by silky tannins and fresh acidity. Orange peel, resin and white pepper linger on the velvety finish. Plush, plump and vivid.
