Estate: Founded in 1896 by Giovanni Massolino, the historical winery is located in center of Serralunga d’Alba in Piemonte. Since the 1990’s Franco and Roberto Massolino head the 23 hectare estate. Along with vineyards in the Vigna Rionda, Margheria and Parafada MGA [crus], the family has recently acquired vineyards outside of Barolo in Barbaresco.
Winemaking: Grapes come from different vineyards and subzones in Serralunga, ranging in elevation from 320 and 360 meters, with mainly calcareous soils. Vines range in age from 10 to 55 years, depending on the vineyard. Fermentation and maceration for 15 days, followed by ageing “in large oak barrels for at least 30 months and is left to mature in bottles placed in special dark, cool cellars for just over a year”.
Tasting Notes: Garnet with brick edges in colour, with aromas of cherry, strawberry, dried rose petal, licorice, candied violet, mint and a wisp of smoky earth. Cherry, cranberry, strawberry, black cherry glide atop a savoury undercurrent of crushed black peppercorn, licorice, tarry earth and truffle, framed by muscular tannins and fresh acidity. Dark fruit, earth and baking spice linger on the plush finish. Well balanced and robust, with a serene, poised demeaner.
