Estate: Founded in 1961 by Margret Etten Cantarelli, Montemelino is located in the northern hills above Lake Trasimeno, in Tuoro, Umbria. The 8 hectares of vineyards are devoted to the traditional and native grapes of their tiny Colli del Trasimeno DOC; Grechetto, Malvasia, Trebbiano, Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo and Gamay del Trasimeno [Cannonau/Grenache]. Margaret and her husband Guido have passed the reins to their daughter, Sabina. For a detailed look at the estate, check out their bio page on the Selection Naturel [their US importer] site here.
Winemaking: The estate is farmed organically and sustainably. Vineyards have alluvial soils mixed with clay and limestone, located at around 300 meters above sea level. Spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, aged in cement tanks for 1 year before bottling. Minimal added sulfur, unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Notes: Garnet in colour with aromas of cherry, wildflowers and a trace of campfire smoke. Cherry, black cherry, trace of thyme and white pepper glide across good tannins and fresh acidity. A bitter streak accents red fruit on the spicy finish. Gluggable and fresh.
