Estate: The Figli Luigi Oddero estate was created in in 2006, when brothers Luigi and Giacomo Oddero divided the renowned Oddero estate between them. Luigi started his own winery, whilst Giacomo retained the Oddero cellar. Upon Luigi’s passing in 2010, his wife and children, Maria and Giovanni, manage the estate. They enlisted Dante Scaglioni of Bruno Giacosa fame to take over winemaking. The 32 hectare estate has 18 hectares of Nebbiolo vineyards, farming is organic “in order to protect our land and bring out the best the vineyards have to offer”.
Winemaking: Grapes are from “mid-hillside vineyards exposed to sunlight in the morning and evening’, with marly soils “rich in humus and mineral salts”, with traces of clay and sand, at 250-300 meters in elevation, in La Morra. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, “malolactic fermentation is carried out between the following fall and spring” aged in huge 85 hectoliter oak botti for 18 months depending on vintage, followed by 1 year in the bottle before release.
Tasting Notes: Garnet in colour, with aromas of rose, strawberry, dried herbs and earth. Strawberry, raspberry, lavender, black pepper, trace of tarry earth and an herbal streak are framed by firm tannins and fresh acidity. Wild strawberry, herbs and earth linger between each sip. Straightforward and versatile.
