budget friendly estate bottled italy organic sicily

Barone di Villagrande: Bianco Superiore & Rosso Etna DOC 2016

Estate: For nearly 300 years the Nicolosi family has been making wines on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. A legendary family, in 1727 Emperor Charles VI of Augsburg, King of Naples, bestowed Don Carmelo Nicolosi the title of Baron of Villagrande. In 1869 Paolo Nicolosi pioneered identifying separating varietals in winemaking, at a time when all types of grapes [red and white] were blended together, “creating the ancestor of what today is the Etna Bianco Superiore”. And it was Carlo Nicolosi Asmundo, in 1968 who wrote the disciplinary for Etna DOC, the first DOC in Sicily. Today, Marco Nicolosi passionately follows in the footsteps of his family, continuing the commitment to land and vine. The estate has been certified organic since 1989.

Philosophy: “We believe that the nature that surrounds us is the most precious heritage we have and working respecting its delicate balance has always been our goal. Our intervention is limited on assisting the vine first and then the grapes on an emotional journey. The wines born in our cellar are expression of the terroir, of the vines, of the vintage.”
