Estate: Chiara Penati and her husband Michele Conoscenti founded Oltretorrente in 2010. The name Oltretorrente translates to “beyond the stream,” in reference to the Scrivia, a tributary of the Po River, but it can also be interpreted as “countercurrent”. Agronomists, they had worked throughout Italy and decided to start their own estate in the Tortona hills of Piemonte, northwestern Italy. The 7 hectares of vineyards range from 4 to 100 years in age and are located on steep slopes. Farming organically and biodynamically, they passionately protect and maintain the old vines and biodiversity.
Philosophy: They are committed to “a balance between saving and preserving the legacy old farmers left us and making high quality wines from these old vineyards with an organic approach, which is the best way to express the history, the soil, the identity of this area.
Winemaking: Grapes are from 2 hectares of north facing vineyards Rampone and Simonelli, planted in 1996 and 2016 at 300 meters in elevation, with silty calcareous soils. Grapes are whole cluster pressed, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by 8 months ageing on the fine lees in stainless steel.
Tasting Notes: Gold in colour, with aromas of lemon, green apple, hay, wet wool, clay minerality and white flowers. Racy acidity glosses lemon, yellow apple, wildflowers, citrus zest and a drizzle of honey. Grapefruit and chalk minerality linger between each sunny sip. Silky and vibrant.
