Estate: In the 1950’s, Luigi Pira began selling his grapes and wine to négociants and wineries in Alba. In the early 1990’s his son Gianpaolo took the reins and began bottling the estate’s wines, his first Barolo vintage was 1993. Today his brothers Romolo and Claudio work alongside him. Located in the commune of Serralunga d’Alba, in the eastern part of Barolo, the 12 hectares of Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera vineyards are farmed using organic and sustainable methods.
Winemaking: Grapes are from a 1 hectare vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba at 320 meters in elevation, planted in 1959 and 1995, with limestone and clay soil. Aged in large wood barrels for 24 months.
Tasting Notes: Dark garnet in colour, very aromatic with cherry, black cherry, wild strawberry, bramble, wild rose, black pepper, pine forest and licorice. Layers of vanilla, forest floor, black cherry, pomegranate, raspberry, leather, rose petal, tarry earth and black pepper are supported by muscular tannins and fresh acidity. Cedar, black cherry, cigar box spice, black pepper and a trace of licorice linger on the lengthy finish. Velvety, plush, complex and well balanced.
