Estate: The legendary Piemonte estate was founded in 1886 by Paolo Conterno. Located in the renowned Ginestra MGA or cru in Monforte d’Alba, the winery is now headed by the 4th generation, siblings Giorgio and Marissa Conterno. The 10 hectares of vineyards are comprised not just of Nebbiolo, but also Barbera and Dolcetto. Additionally, the family owns Tenuta Ortaglia, a 13 hectare estate in Tuscany.
Winemaking: Vineyards are farmed using sustainable methods. Grapes for ‘Riva del Bric’ are from south/southeast facing vines planted in 1986 and 1989, at 300-350 meters in elevation, with clay and calcareous soil. Maceration for 15-20 days, aged in large oak casks.
Tasting Notes: Transparent garnet in colour, with aromas of black cherry, strawberry, licorice, black pepper, underbrush and a trace of cedar. Ripe black cherry, blackberry, cherry, red currant along with black pepper and a wisp of cedar are framed by firm tannins and fresh acidity. Tarry earth and black cherry linger on the velvety finish. A lovely, fruity Barolo from a hot and generally considered not so good vintage.
