Suertes del Marqués ‘La Solana’ Valle de la Orotava DO 2017

Estate: Suertes del Marques is a family winery that has been producing wines since 2006. Owner Jonatan Garcia Lima, “is part of the growing breed of intensely passionate young Spanish producers capitalising on the heritage vines and allowing the volcanic soils to speak through his eloquent, mineral driven wines”. The 11 hectares of vineyards are located on the slopes of Teide, an active volcano in the northern part of Tenerife, in the Valle de la Orotava appellation, which is one of the oldest winemaking regions in the Canary Islands. The estate is widely recognized as the best on Tenerife.

Winemaking: Low intervention, organic and sustainable practices are used in both the vineyards and cellar. ‘La Solana’ is a 1.5 hectare vineyard of ungrafted, 80-150 year old Listan Negro vines. Located at 350-350 meters in elevation, the soil is clay over volcanic rock. Vines are braided in the traditional trenzado method. 50% whole cluster fermentation with native yeasts in cement tanks, aged for 11 months in neutral French oak foudres [very large barrels].

Tasting Notes: Red violet in colour with aromas of black cherry, smoky earth, summer woods, grilled herbs, sea spray and candied rose petal. Volcanic smoke encases black cherry, pomegranate, red currant and grilled rosemary, backed by tangy acidity and grippy tannins. Black currant, black cherry, a trace of nutmeg and smoky minerality linger on the velvety finish. Silky, plush and engaging.
