Estate: Guido Porro is a 4th generation winemaker, from a family whose land has always been passed down from father to son. Located in the renowned Barolo producing commune of Serralunga d’Alba in Piedmont, Porro’s vineyards are in a south-southwest facing amphitheater. Here in the ‘Lazzarito’ MGA or cru, grapes receive full sun and protection from the wind. Focusing on traditional methods in both the vineyard and cellar, Guido Porro has a reputation as “under the radar”. His wines receive many accolades for their natural expression of the grape; however his unassuming character doesn’t have him seeking the spotlight.
Winemaking: Vineyards are farmed using organic and sustainable methods. The Lazzairasco vineyard is 300-350 meters in elevation, with clay and limestone soil. Vines are 40-45 years in age. Maceration and fermentation with indigenous yeasts in cement vats, aged 3 years in at least 5th passage Slavonian oak botti.
Tasting Notes: Dark garnet in colour, with aromas of tarry earth, black cherry, rose petal, white pepper, candied violet and nutmeg. Cherry, strawberry, red currant, rose petal and baking spice are framed with silky, firm tannins and fresh acidity. Red fruit, tarry earth, black pepper and a trace of roasted fennel linger on the plush finish. Elegant and agile, this will become more intricate with time.

I had the pleasure of meeting the son this fall, along with many other family members who were there to help with the harvest. A wonderful family. And they make good Barolo’s!
