Estate: Grifalco was founded in 2004 by Tuscan winemakers Fabrizio and Cecilia Piccin, who decided that southern Italy was more ideal for a new project then their native Tuscany. They created the name Grifalco as a symbol of their past and present. It combines the abundant falcons that thrive in the Vulture region of Basilicata, the Piccin’s adopted home, and the mythological griffin of Montepulciano in Tuscany where they are from. The Piccin family currently has 18 hectares of organically farmed, mineral rich vineyards located on Mount Vulture.
Winemaking: Vines are 10-30 years old, 450-550 meters in elevation in volcanic soil. Fermented in stainless steel, malolactic fermentation in oak. Aged 6-12 months in 2nd use American oak barrels and French tonneaux, followed by 4 months in the bottle.
Tasting Notes: Dark garnet in colour, with aromas of wildflowers, tarry earth, ash minerality portobello and cherry. Morello cherry, blackberry, plum, white pepper, earth and iron minerality are framed by fresh acidity and firm tannins. Cigar box spice and tart red fruit linger on the plush finish.
