Estate: Maria Gioia Rosellini along with her husband Nicola, passionately restored and revitalized the 16th century Ca’Orologio estate and villa. The 34 hectare estate [with 11 hectares of vineyards] is located in Baone, on the southern slopes of the Euganean Hills, in Veneto, northeastern Italy. The Euganean hills have varying, distinct soils due their geological formation. Each vineyard and “each soil, therefore, has its own personality .” The vineyards on Mount Cecilia are in carbonate bedrock and sedimentary limestone soils, whilst the soil on Mount Castello is volcanic in origin. The estate has been certified organic since 2000.
Philosophy: “I love wine and good food, and my ambitious mission is create a red wine that is the ultimate expression of the place I love and where I work: the Euganean Hills.”
Winemaking: Vineyards are located on the Baone ‘Castello hill’ and ‘Cecilia hill’, vines are 10 to 46 years in age. “Fermented partly in steel and partly in an oak barrel-shaped vat. Fermentation is spontaneous, without added yeast, and maceration lasts about 16 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in the barriques.” Aged for 12 months in barriques, 6 months in 50 hl oak barrel-shaped vats, followed by 6 months in the bottle.
Tasting Notes: Inky red violet in colour, with aromas of black cherry, black currant, black licorice, black pepper and summer woods. Silky tannins frame ripe black cherry, black currant, plum, smoky earth and black pepper. Good acidity emphasizes rich mocha and cigar box spice on the plush finish. Well balanced and opulent.
