Estate: Respect for nature, low intervention and organic farming has been passed down from father to son for generations at Camarda. The 90 year old vines are located in volcanic soils between the slopes of Mt. Etna and the Alcantara Valley in Castiglione di Sicilia. The steep, stone terraced vineyards [650 meters in elevation] necessitate all vineyard work being done by hand.
Winemaking: Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, aged in used oak barriques.
Tasting Notes: Transparent garnet in colour, with aromas of smoky earth, rose petal, black pepper, cherry and roasted poblano. Black cherry, black currant, blackberry and a shake of black pepper glide across firm tannins and fresh acidity. Smoky earth, spice, grilled herbs and a drizzle of caramel linger on the lengthy, dry finish. An agile, easy drinking character prevails, even with the substantial flavours.
[It was fantastic with chile rellano and plant based sausage.]
