Estate: Iole Rabasco inherited her family estate of vines and olive groves over 15 years ago. The 3.5 hectare property is located in in the village of Pianella, the heart of Abruzzo in eastern Italy. The majority of vines are 40+ years in age, the land has never been touched by chemicals. Iole is passionate about low intervention methods in both the vineyard and cellar.
Winemaking: Vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically. Grapes are from vines in calcareous clay mixed with alluvial sediment and fossil remains. No added sulphur. The vineyard is located right next to the front gate of the house, from which the wine takes its name ‘Cancelli’ [meaning gate]. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, aged in stainless steel, no added sulphur. Unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Notes: Dark garnet in colour with aromas of black cherry, black currant, smoke, sour cherry, roasted herbs, earth and Brothers Johnson funk. All the cherries [red, black and sour], red currant and red apple glide over grippy tannins and good acidity. Smoke, blackberry, earth and grilled herbs linger between each sip. Rustic and engaging.
