Estate: Giovanna Maccario has headed her family’s estate for the past 20 years. Located in the heart of the Dolceacqua appellation, a few miles from the sea in Western Liguria, Giovanna; along with her husband Goetz Dringenberg, is renowned for her promotion and dedication to the tiny region. The 4 hectares of terraced vineyards are located on steep cliffs, many of the vines are over 100 years old. Giovanna vinifies and bottles each vineyard parcel separately to express the distinct terroir of each plot. Vineyards are farmed using organic and low intervention methods.
Philosophy: “I simply vinify in the most natural way possible the grapes that the vineyard gives me.”
Winemaking: The Posaú vineyard is a warm vineyard, and one of the most famous in the entire appellation. Named ‘the place of repose’ [Posaú is the local dialect], it is 300 meters in elevation, in a natural amphitheater, with sand and silica soils. Hand harvested grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in stainless steel.
Tasting Notes: Transparent red violet in colour with aromas of smoke, salty caramel, black cherry, wildflowers and peppery spice. A brambly, savoury element overlays blackberry, black cherry, crushed black peppercorn, a hint of raspberry and pomegranate. Tangy acidity and firm tannins fuse with cherry, spice and smoky minerality on the dry finish. Rustic, engaging, fantastic on its own, versatile at the table. [Excellent with burrata, watermelon and heirloom tomatoes.]
